FAQs

What should I expect at my first session?

Your physical therapist will take a thorough history and perform a musculoskeletal evaluation in order to determine a custom treatment plan for you. You should plan for the evaluation to take 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes. You will only ever be billed for a maximum of one hour even if the session goes longer.

What should I bring to my first session?

Please bring your insurance card and a photo ID. Please come dressed in loose fitting athletic clothing and athletic shoes.

Whenever possible, please complete the new patient paperwork ahead of time. This will allow us to devote the maximum amount of time to your appointment. The easiest and most efficient way to do this is through the patient portal link that was sent to you in your confirmation text or e-mail. Other options include filling the forms out on your computer and e-mailing them to kelly@activedelmarpt.com, or printing out the forms and bringing them with you to your first visit.

What does a typical physical therapy treatment involve?

A typical treatment will last anywhere from 45 minutes to one hour and 15 minutes depending on your injury, exercise tolerance, and stage of rehab. You will only ever be billed for a maximum of one hour even if the session goes longer. Generally, a session involves a warm-up, followed by the therapist performing any appropriate manual therapy techniques based on the findings of your evaluation. These techniques may include joint and/ or soft tissue mobilization, and stretching. A large portion of your session will be devoted to specific exercise, neuromuscular reeducation techniques, and/or sport-specific training when applicable.

All of the most current research in physical therapy points to the combination of manual therapy and specific exercise as the most effective treatments for musculoskeletal injuries across the board. While sometimes counterintuitive, most injured tissues require (appropriate) stress in order to heal.  There is limited evidence for the use of passive modalities including ultrasound and laser. Electrical stimulation may be beneficial in some instances for acute injury or post-surgically to reeducate muscles.

How long will I need to attend physical therapy?

The length of time you will need to attend therapy varies based on your individual injury and goals. Typically, we like to follow patients for at least 4-6 weeks at varying visit frequencies. Your individual plan will be discussed after the completion of the initial evaluation and will be re-visited at subsequent visits based on your response to treatment. At Active Delmar Physical Therapy you will spend the entire session one-on-one with the physical therapist. As such, you can expect to need fewer visits than in traditional PT settings where you may only spend 15 minutes one-on-one.

Is physical therapy covered by insurance?

As we are a new practice, becoming credentialed with insurance companies takes time. We are planning to be in network with the following insurance plans, but will contact you if we are not yet credentialed with your particular plan:

  • Blueshield of Northeastern New York

  • CDPHP

  • Empire BlueCross BlueShield

  • Empire Plan / MPN

  • Medicare

  • MVP

  • United Healthcare

  • Workers Compensation of New York

Most of the time insurance will cover a portion of your physical therapy visit.
You may owe a co-pay, which will be collected at the time of your visit.
Should you have an insurance plan that we are out-of-network with, we are able to provide you with a superbill that you can send to your insurance company which may then reimburse a portion of the payment at an out-of-network rate.
We also accept out of pocket payment if you do not have insurance or choose not to use your insurance. Out of pocket payment will be due at the time of your visit. The out-of-pocket rate at Active Delmar Physical Therapy is $100 for an initial evaluation and $75 per follow-up appointment.

We will do our best to provide you with accurate information about your insurance benefits, however this is not a guarantee of payment. Please call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card to verify your benefits for physical therapy.
